- Description
- Describes fifty-six manuscripts of "The Canterbury Tales," providing detailed contents and collations, plus briefer comments on binding, decoration, glosses, rubrics, scribes, and provenance. Follows Manly and Rickert's classifications of the manuscripts and records the order of the tales as they relate to these classifications.
- Presents the descriptions alphabetically by city of location and includes descriptions of nine "Smaller Fragments," a list of "Other Recorded Manuscripts" (now lost), an index of "Former Owners and inscribed Names," and addenda and corrigenda for Seymour's "Volume I" (non-"Canterbury Tales"manuscripts; "Studies in the Age of Chaucer" 19 (1997), no.7).
- The twenty-eight-page introduction summarizes classification issues, comments on the relative chronology and affiliations of the seven earliest manuscripts, and considers questions of Chaucer's revisions and later interpolations.
