- Clarifies tensions within early modern English humanism concerning the value of vernacular English writing, and assesses Chaucer's influence on Sir Thomas More--direct, indirect, and borderline possible; learned and vulgar; proverbial and imagistic. Identifies a number of "Chaucerisms" in More's works, suggests that WBPT was his "favourite tale" among Chaucer's works, and distinguishes between the "classroom" classicism of humanism and versions that combined classical and native traditions.
