"And lif is lust": The Variants of Lust in Chaucer's "Troilus and Criseyde."

Description: Traces the textual variants of “lust” and “lusty” in the eighteen earliest witnesses to TC, identifying three kinds variation: “semantic/spelling variants, material variants, and scribal intervention.” Shows that, in tracing the “personal bias” of scribes the latter group, we observe both “iterations and interpretations,” i.e., a continuum of textual and interpretive concerns which, in effect, produce "word-by-word literary criticism."
