Chaucer the Pilgrim.
- Published
- PMLA 69 (1954): 928-36.
- Description
- Distinguishes between Chaucer the poet. and Chaucer the pilgrim-narrator of CT, characterizing the "persona" of the latter as "shy" but "gregarious," one who admires the "values" of high society, the "material prosperity" of the bourgeoisie, and good company--an amiable fellow able to "recognize" and "deplore" rascals, but also appreciate "genuine virtue." Focuses on the comic "fallible first person singular" point of view in the GP.
