- Argues that SqT is an exception among medieval romances because it investigates things that are not what they seem. The first section of the tale scrutinizes the mechanics of marvels and wonder; the second explores the mechanics of stories, especially figurative language. Draws heavily on appeals to medieval philosophical theories and finds that the tale links literature to marvels, claiming that such an association was crucial to the development of literary theory in England
