Caxton's Editing of the 'Canterbury Tales'
- Published
- Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America 108.1 (2014): 41-60.
- Description
- Compares the first and second editions of Caxton's CT. Using digital tools to collate the first and second editions, finds that Caxton not only added and removed lines, but made over 3,000 changes based on a manuscript source that was closer to the textual tradition than his source for the first edition. Includes three appendices: A lists variants for SqT; B provides the number of "significant changes" made to each tale; C lists extant manuscripts.
