- Description
- An extended examination of Boccaccio's "Teseida," Chaucer's KnT, and their relations. After describing "Teseida" and its debts to Dante and the classics, Boitani surveys Chaucer's uses of the work in Anel, PF, TC, and, more extensively, KnT. Tabulates, line by line, the dependencies of KnT on "Teseida," Book 7--translations, adaptations, suggestions, conflations, and summaries--and explores Chaucer's debt to Boccaccio's glosses as well as to his narrative. Discusses the impact of "Teseida" on the plot and structure of KnT, its characters, imagery, and style. Appends an English translation of Boccaccio's glosses on the houses of Mars and Venus.
