Description
Chaganti explores the "dialectical interaction between inscription and performance" that underlines the "poetics of enshrinement" in medieval visual art, literature, and discourse on representation. Individual chapters address "Saint Erkenwald," the N-Town "Assumption," "Pearl," PardT, and the brief lyric "In 8 is alle my love." Chapter 5, "Reliquaries of the Mind: Figuration, Enshrinement, and Performance in the Pardoner's Tale" (pp. 131-53), presents PardT as a "self-enshrining performance," structured in a way that occludes differences between utterance and description of utterance. Chaganti also comments on the lyric "I" in BD and on the enshrining imagination in BD and HF.
