The Reeve's Tale: Version Prepared for Recitation at the 'Summer Diversions.' Oxford: 1939
- Published
- Tolkien Studies 5 (2008): 173-83.
- Description
- Reprints the "rare pamphlet version" of Tolkien's lightly abbreviated performance version of RvT, adapted from Skeat's edition with diacritical marks to aid pronunciation and several adjustments to emphasize dialect features of the Tale. In his preparatory remarks, Tolkien comments that Chaucer presents an "East-Anglian reeve, who is amusing southern, largely London, folk with imitations of northern speech brought southward by the attraction of the universities."
