Philosophical Sleaze? The 'Strok of Thoght' in the Miller's Tale and Chaucerian Fabliau
- Published
- MLR 102 (2007): 621-40.
- Description
- Chaucer's special contribution to the fabliau genre is the design whereby apparently disconnected, often spontaneous plot incidents are suddenly "knit up"--that is, perceived by readers as belonging to a providential master plan. Although MilT is the prime example, all of Chaucer's fabliaux are informed by Boethian philosophy. Chaucer as author assumes the role of Maker, bringing his audience to a moment of epiphany in which what appeared to be chance is perceived as part of a larger design.
