The introduction explains the uses and operation of astrolabes; surveys the critical reception of the work (authorship, dedication to son Lewis, date, sources, style, Chaucer as pedagogue, Chaucer and astrology, and relation to Equat); and describes thirty-two manuscripts, fifteen printed editions, and their relations.
