- Description
- "Pearl" reflects the political and social turmoil of Richard's reign and is a product of the rich visual and verbal culture of his Cheshire coterie. Political and social allusions in the poem engage Lollardy, labor laws, court magnificence, Parliamentary upheavals, the death of Queen Anne, and other turbulences during Richard's reign. Like Langland, Chaucer, and Gower, the "Pearl" poet is a political poet. Bowers includes frequent comparisons and contrasts to Chaucer and his works, especially CT and LGW.
