Joan of Kent and Noble Women's Roles in Chaucer's World

- Description
- Although Chaucer's "circle" has generally been considered wholly masculine, it may well have included contemporary women such as Joan of Kent. Joan was a prosperous and powerful woman, an interceder and a mediator: a model for a character such as Prudence in Mel. A careful reading of the household registers for women in this category might provide a different context for Chaucer's works: a "clearer and better shaped image" of his circle.
