Description
Nineteen essays by various authors that together seek to "raise the standard of scholarly editing for Middle English texts," describing theories and problems of editing and offering practical recommendations on how to edit. The contributors explore the notion of an authorial text, the functions of parallel-text editions, and perspectives on meter and pedagogy as they relate to editing. They suggest ways to deal with the difficulties of particular kinds of texts: scientific, astrological, culinary, and glossographical. They discuss the tools of editing, including computer technology, and explain what is desirable in a glossary, notes, and a text itself. The collection includes a "Practical Guide" to working with manuscripts and lists available facsimiles and useful dictionaries.
