Chaucer at Woodstock: A Theme in English Verse of the Eighteenth Century
- Published
- Review of English Studies 48 (1997): 157-67.
- Description
- Geoffrey Chaucer, traditionally thought to be an early resident of Woodstock, and John Churchill, first duke of Marlborough, are united by geography. Together they represent English glory and are thus commemorated in minor verse of the eighteenth century, samples of which are included in Stanley's article. Chaucer's residency at Woodstock, however, is mere pretense.
