Woodcut Illustrations of the Canterbury Tales, 1483-1602
- Published
- Library, ser. 6, 19 (1997): 25-67.
- Description
- Traces the history of two related series of woodcuts. The first, cut for Caxton's 1483 edition, apparently derives from miniatures in the manuscript now known as the Oxford Fragments (Ox1 and Ox2). The second series was copied from Caxton for Pynson's 1492 edition. Both series were used in later editions. Appendices describe the editions and provide tables indicating placements of individual woodcuts.
- Revised version in William K. Finley and Joseph Rosenblum, eds. Chaucer Illustrated: Five Hundred Years of the Canterbury Tales in Pictures (New Castle, Del.: Oaak Knoll; London: British Museum, 2003), pp. 73-119.
