Description
Having normalized the language "in accordance with the grammar and spelling of late fourteenth-century London English," Duncan divides this "comprehensive selection" of lyrics into four thematic groups, three of which include lyrics attributed to Chaucer.
Part 1 (Love Lyrics) includes "Now Welcome, Somer," Ros, Wom Nob, Wom Unc, the "Canticus Troili," Compl d'Am, MercB, and BalCompl. Part 2 (Penitential and Moral Lyrics) includes For, Truth, and Gent. Part 4 (Miscellaneous Lyrics) includes Purse.
An extensive commentary provides textual, contextual, and linguistic information, and appendices treat music, meter, and a "Syllabic Analysis of Middle English Verse."
