Author / Editor
Gross, Gregory W.

Title
Trade Secrets: Chaucer, the Pardoner, the Critics

Published
Modern Language Studies 25:4 (1995): 1-36.

Description
Characterizing the critics as essentialist, Gross traces views of the Pardoner's sexuality, beginning with Kittredge's and Curry's interests in secrecy and moral scapegoating.
After establishing the medieval relationship of idolatry and sodomy, Gross concludes that the Pardoner makes "unnatural," "unproductive" use of both his sexuality and his knowledge of rhetoric.

Chaucer Subjects
Pardoner and His Tale.
