Examination of tax records gives a picture of the distribution of clerical personnel in London around 1380.
The majority of more than 800 secular clergy were unbeneficed chaplains, many coming from outside the city.
Other categories include clerks, beneficed parochial clergy, beneficed chantry chaplains, and the most elite group, the canons of St. Paul's and the chapel of St. Martin-le-Grand.
