Recurring Rhymes in 'Troilus and Criseyde'

- Studia Neophilologica 52 (1980): 287-97.
- Description
- The repeated rhymes "trouthe"/"routhe," "serve"/"disserve," and "mente"/"entente" accentuate the poem's development. The first two pairs underscore the perversion of "fin amours." Troilus asks for his lady's "routhe" in exchange for his "trouthe," but her "untrouthe" causes him "routhe." He ideally deserves better for his service. Repetition of "mente"/"entente" illustrates the disharmony between conscious and unconscious motives.
