Chaucer's Man of Law and the Tale of Constance
- Published
- PMLA 89 (1974): 285-95.
- Description
- Reads the Man of Law's materials in CT as an unfolding characterization of the lawyer, commenting on the relationship of tale to teller, the narrator's use of law and legalistic rhetoric, and the relation of MLT to other rhyme royal tales in CT. The lawyer is concerned with wealth and rank, expedient in what he remembers and how he uses authorities, and tedious in his sentiments and excesses of rhetoric (especially apostrophes and rhetorical questions).
