Musical Imagery in the Poetry of Juan Ruiz, Guillaume de Machaut, and Chaucer: A Comparative Study
- Published
- Dissertation Abstracts International 42 (1981): 1141-42A.
- Description
- Medieval musical allusions provide an internationally shared set of signs for allegorical poetry and help unify medieval literature stylistically. Ruiz ironically conflates the fleshly and heavenly aspects of music, and Machaut employs harmony to signify divine order, as does Chaucer in BD; in GP, SumT, and PardT, however, Chaucer subverts divine harmony.
