Chaucer's Revision of 'Troilus and Criseyde'

Published
Studies in Bibliography 42 (1989): 153-84.

Description
R. K. Root's theory of how the text of TC underwent authorial revision, thus resulting in a number of significant variants between the manuscript groups, has been challenged by Barry A. Windeatt (1984) and Ralph Hanna (1986).
Root clearly went too far in trying to explain these variants with a single hypothesis. However, the skepticism of Windeatt and Hanna goes too far in the other direction. Undoubtedly, Chaucer made revisions, but when or how they came about we cannot claim to know.

Chaucer Subjects
Troilus and Criseyde.
