- Analyzes "the state of Chaucer studies in China" by reviewing "Fang Zhong's translation into Chinese" of MilT. Beginning in the 1930s, Fang Zhong translated TC and most of CT in prose, modifying the Middle English version in two ways: changes to make the translation "more vivid to a Chinese audience" and omission of bawdy elements.
- Thus, the Chinese translation makes changes in Nicholas's songs, in the "knedyng trough," in making Alison John's "first wife," and so on, and omits or mutes the obscenity.
