Description
A variorum edition of Chaucer's SqT based on the Hengwrt and built on the model that has evolved over many years: critical and textual introductions, newly established text for SqT, collations providing evidence both of the manuscripts and of the printed editions, textual and explanatory notes, and bibliography.
Collating ten manuscripts and twenty-three printed editions, Baker also surveys criticism through 1987. Critical commentary includes sections on sources and analogues; the date of SqT; the question of allegory; the fragment and its continuations; the relation to CT, KnT, MerT, and FranT; genre; and suitability of tale to teller.
