Description
Stillinger addresses intertextual and formal strategies used by Dante, Boccaccio, and Chaucer "in search of new ways to make a book." The "Vita nuova" explores structures in relation to authority in prose and verse, and "Filostrato" mines the dramatic details of Dante's work while eliminating its differences between lyric and narrative verse.
Chaucer borrows from each poet, but TC ultimately rejects Boccaccio's avant-garde impulse, returning to mainstream historiography. Includes close examinations of the three "canticus Troili."
