Chaucer the Puritan
Description
An account of the resource
Exemplifies the variety of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century versions of Chaucer, which reflects he "fragmentation, diversity, and complexity" of the English Reformation itself. Discusses Chaucer as an authority figure in the writings of polemical authors Job Throckmorton, John Clare, Matthew Sutcliffe, Richard Bancroft, and Samuel Harsnett, gauging their relative discernment in understanding Chaucer's works. Most surprising, perhaps, is Harsnett's use of MilT.

Argues that Chaucer's "main contribution to English satire" is the "reunification" of "Horace's gentleness, Juvenal's verve, and St. Jerome's moral vision," augmented by his "facile use of the double-entendre" and "his own special combination of clever wit and humane understanding." Surveys classical satire, the complaint tradition, and satire in Gower and Langland.

Love and Its Critics: From the Song of Songs to Shakespeare and Milton's Eden.
Description
An account of the resource
Surveys depictions of love, from the Bible to English Renaissance literature, exploring poetic representations of love and the effects of efforts to sublimate or suppress it. The section on Chaucer (pp. 280-94), labeled "Post-Fin'amor English Poetry," treats courtly love in KnT as a "Neoplatonized and Christianized caricature of fin'amor." Juxtaposing KnT with MilT, Chaucer suggests that "love must be a matter of heart, mind, spirit, and body all at once," a reassertion of traditional fin'amors sensibility. Reads WBPT and its emphasis on glossing as an indictment of courtly and clerical efforts to suppress female desire.

An account of the resource
Inspired by CT and designed for 2-3 players, aged 10 and above. Players are "medieval pardoners who travel the Road to Canterbury tempting Pilgrims with the Seven Deadly Sins--and then pardon these sins for a fee," with the goal of winning the most money. Details of illustration and design derive from the Ellesmere manuscript and Hieronymus Bosch's "The Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things."
