From Morpheme to Motif in Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'
Description
An account of the resource
The lexical morphemes of Chaucer's poetic tales have been marked in the data base as narrative "verbs" or "adjectives" (Todorov: dynamic v. static predicate formulas). The character and percentage of formula "per lexical unit" provide a more reliable measure of formulaic expression than the procedures of Duggan or Wittig.

Eingebildetes Wissen: Imaginationstheorie, Haushalt und Kommerz in spätmittelalterlichen britischen Traumvisionen.
Description
An account of the resource
Clarifies the late medieval shift from household economics to usurious commerce, and argues that HF, John Lydgate's "Temple of Glass," and Gavin Douglas's "Palice of Honour" depict the "dissolution" of traditional households entailed in this shift. As well, the poems' buildings and spaces represent the “mental ventricles of imagination, logic and memory" and reflect a new "chresmatistic" poetics in which the "usurious multiplication and arbitrary evaluation of images" is aligned with a "desirous imagination."

Description
An account of the resource
Point of view in the structure of CT and the use of direct speech and dialogue are a consequence of Chaucer's interest in showing the contradictions in his environment without the mediating influence of an omniscient narrator. The open structure of CT invites questions about the aim of the work as a social and literary product.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos of Chaucer and His Prioress
Description
An account of the resource
Chaucer uses his naïve narrator to achieve an effective balance among the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos in CT. Also, this narrator's view of the Prioress overwhelms her appeal to ethos in PrPT and her heavy emphasis on pathos also undermines her credibility. Effective and ineffective rhetorical appeals are also evident in the contrast between the Parson and the Pardoner.
